Bighorn Logging was founded in 1981 as a contract cutting company by Harve Dethlefs. Proving that it’s not too late to start something new, Harve took an early retirement from his warehouse manager position at Tektronix’s to become a full-time timber faller (and business owner) at the age of 43. With just two employees, Bighorn quickly grew into a sizable contract cutting company within its first year and a half of being in business. That quick and steady growth is what caused Harve to risk it all and transition Bighorn into a full-service logging company. Naturally due to his heavy commitment to each and every job, that decision paid off and the company only grew from there.
In 2002, President Mark Standley Jr, joined the company as a choker setter eventually working his way up to Vice President/Co-Owner under Harve. Together, they helped build upon Harve’s original vision. That meant staying ahead of the curve, finding and taking care of great employees, and investing in equipment and technology to do just that. That dedication eventually led Bighorn to what it is today. Now operating all over the Pacific Northwest, Bighorn employs approximately 70 employees and operates on average of 12-14 crews, including six cable logging sides.
Shortly after celebrating Bighorn Logging’s 45th anniversary, Harve passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 88. Marking not only the loss of our founder and president, but also a friend, mentor, and respected leader of the logging community. No words could ever fully capture the force of nature Harve was. His impact was immeasurable, and his legacy is now forever etched in history. As we carry Harve’s legacy forward, he will continue to live on through the company he built, the people who carry on his work, and the values he instilled back in 1981. We remain committed to that same dedication, determination, and hard work that started it all. Rest in Peace, Boss.
